John Callos

TRIATHLETE
High school track star John Callos was the two miler track champion, then went on to become a successful business owner. Like so many others, John’s busy career and lifestyle came before his health.  His expanding mid-section was a constant reminder of the results of twenty years of inactivity. “I’ll watch you from here” was the comment to son Connor when asked to “come swimming with me” on a family vacation.  That started John on an amazing journey that over the next four years not only took back his health -- but took him to places most of us only dream about.

In 2005 John entered a local sprint distance triathlon on a whim – he needed medical attention at the finish. He sought the best triathlon advice and equipment then tried to coach himself. Plagued with injuries and multiple doctor visits, giving up was never an option. He knew he needed help and went through several coaches before he found TBC Coach David Warden. Then they embarked on some lofty goals, among other things, John wanted to lose weight and complete an Ironman, in that order.

Six months of work with Coach David Warden and John completed both the Hawaii and Vineman 70.3 half Ironman series. Crossing the finish line in both races he was still longing to hear “John Callos, you are an Ironman!” It was his mantra during much of his training. It doesn’t happen for a half Ironman…so back to training and on to his IMAZ goal. John crossed the finish line at IMAZ in November 08.

In his quest to return to health and fitness, John has completed ultra marathons, triathlons, and countless hundred+ milers on the bike. Yet he longed for an epic challenge…something few have ever accomplished…it had to be Ultraman Canada…the invitation-only 3-day triathlon with a 6.2 mile swim,  260 miles of cycling and a double marathon run.  In August of 2009 John joined that elite group of official Ultraman finishers, even though he sustained a broken foot on mile 7 of the 52.4 mile run. John consistently acknowledges the support of his family, (wife April and son Connor) close friends, coaches and other athletes along the way who have become part of his extended family.

John is a great goal setter but even better than that, he is a great goal achiever. Read more about John’s incredible athletic journey in his book Iron Ambition or check out his blog here.

What’s next John?
